Low fat cheese products have steadily gained popularity in the recent years, following the increasing obsession of many to become thin and healthy. The inclusion of the reduced varieties of these dairy products in various low carbohydrate diet programs has also helped in making people more aware of the many health benefits of cheese.

There are several thousands of cheese varieties all over the world, particularly in Europe. Essentially, however, all cheese came from the curd of milk. Usually, the higher the fat content of cheese the tastier and more palatable it is. This is probably the reason why there are only few low-fat cheese varieties available in the market. If not for the fame of diets that are low in carbohydrates, such as the South Beach Diet, low fat cheese will probably only occupy a minute fraction of the total cheese sale per year.

Benefits of Low Fat Cheese

Cheese, including the reduced fat varieties, is rich in calcium. We all know that calcium is very important for stronger bones, especially for women. Calcium, aside from strengthening the bones, is also believed to help in lowering the risk of cancer in middle age to older women, according to some studies. Lastly, there are also studies showing that calcium from dairy products, including cheese, can boost metabolism and burning fat.

Studies from New England Journal of Medicine also show that a diet high in cheese and dairy products is helpful in lowering a person's risk of developing gout. This disease, which is more common to men, is a form of arthritis that targets joints, particularly the big toe.

Low fat cheese's main benefit is that you get all the same nutrients, calcium and protein as other dairy products, without worrying about fat. Thus, if you are trying to lose or maintain your weight, you can eat low fat cheese in lieu of other dairy products.
