Low fat snacks are especially important if you have kids. Kids love to snack, and they're very good at it, too. If you have a pantry full of potato chips, your kids are going to learn habits they'll be fighting off all their lives. Start smart; teach them to like healthy, low fat snacks from the beginning, and you won't have to undo that damage later. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; don't let the problem develop in the first place.

Fresh, raw fruits and vegetables make great low fat snacks. Only a child who has grown up on potato chips and processed food will ever dislike crisp raw broccoli; the child who has learned to like it from a young age will love it. Apples and oranges, carrots and cauliflower; all these things are safe and healthy low fat snacks for children, if they are encouraged in them from a young age.

Older children, who perhaps don't enjoy their fruit and vegetable snack, or who, perhaps, think they are "too cool" for raw vegetables, will need slightly more complicated snacks. Even so, however, their snacks can still be low fat and healthy. Yogurt makes a great snack, especially the low fat kind. And because it comes in so many different flavors, it guarantees that there's a flavor for everyone. For a little extra crunch, add a small handful of granola or other whole-grain cereal to the yogurt.

Home made trail mixes have less salt than the kind you purchase in the store, and because you choose the ingredients, you can turn trail mix into a low fat snack by selecting low fat, low salt ingredients and putting in plenty of 'no sugar added' dried fruits. The fruits add a great texture, and really liven up the trail mix. Avoid dates and prunes, which are just loaded with their own sugars--better than adding the white stuff from the store, no doubt, but still no one's idea of low fat.

With a little ingenuity and a lot of fresh ingredients, making low fat snacks doesn't have to be hard.
