A low fat low cholesterol diet can be very useful both for weight loss and for improving your health. A diet rich in foods that are both low in fat and low in cholesterol is the best way to manage cholesterol related health problems, such as heart disease or high blood pressure.

So what, exactly, is a low fat low cholesterol diet? How do you go about choosing foods that are low in fat and cholesterol? It involves much more than just buying packaged food with "Low Cholesterol" stamped onto the box. In fact, in general, cooking from scratch is going to be your best bet, since preparing meals yourself lets you know just exactly what goes into them. Aim for lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and go with whole grains wherever possible. When in doubt, check the nutrition panel on favorite foods; most will list cholesterol. Avoid foods that are high in cholesterol, of course, but try to stay away from foods with just a moderate amount of cholesterol, as well. Small amounts add up fast, so go with low-cholesterol or cholesterol-free foods whenever possible.

Packaged foods are, almost by their nature, going to be high in cholesterol. But if you simply can't prepare meals from scratch all the time, don't despair; studies have shown that incorporating more soluble fiber into your diet reduces the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. One study found that eating 1.5 to 2 cups of oats each day, whether as hot or cold cereal, or incorporated into meatloaf, soup, bread, breadcrumbs, etc., as part of a low fat low cholesterol diet, lowered cholesterol as well as prescription drugs. That's nothing to sneeze at.

Even so, however, there are two aspects here; in order to be truly effective, a diet need not be only low in cholesterol and high in fiber, but also low in fat. Adding soluble fiber to your diet may help, but it can't fight fat and cholesterol at the same time; hence the low fat low cholesterol diet.
