Walk into just about any party and mention the words "low fat food" and you will see plenty of people stop, grimace, and begin to share an experience they had with a low fat diet food that was absolutely terrible. Unfortunately, that is the perception of far too many people about low fat diet food. But how did it get that way? Here are a few of the reasons low fat food has a less than favorable reputation in some circles.

First, there is plenty of really awful low fat diet food on the market today. Never mind that there is a world of microwave dinners out there that are saturated with salts, fats and other things that are equally as terrible. Because there are low fat prepared dishes that lack flavor and often have weak or undesirable textures, people feel free to think that any low fat diet food is going to be in the same category.

Next, there are people who expected to prepare low fat food expertly on their very first try. Well, the bottom line is that you may have to have some failures in the kitchen before you hit your stride and start turning out tasty dishes that are part of the low fat diet food genre. You didn't learn how to make the high fat stuff successfully overnight, right? People all too often give up after trying to prepare one or two low fat diet food recipes, and then write off the whole effort as not worth it.

Third, there are those who simply do not think that food is going to taste "right" unless it has plenty of fat. It is very true that fats enhance the flavors of so many things we love, from dairy to meats, even to seasoning our vegetables. This may be the most difficult opportunity to overcome, as a person with this mindset will insist that there is only one proper way for a dish to taste. Any use of alternative seasoning methods will result in an inferior effort, and will not be considered tasty.

How do we move past these experiences? We realize that packaged food in general does not taste as good as home-prepared foods. That includes the low fat food items we tried. We get back into the kitchen and work on some recipes with the understanding we may have several more disasters before we start to get the hang of low fat diet food preparation. Last, we open our mind to their being many ways that our favorite foods can be seasoned. We might also open ourselves up to the possibility of finding new low fat diet food recipes that we even like better than our favorite fat laden one. After all, it could happen.

Low fat food does not mean bland, plain, or mediocre. With the right attitude and some willingness to experiment, we can change the bad reputation of the low fat food experience, one person at a time.
